Project Run And Play Week 2

Whew! I made it through another week of furious sewing. For those just joining, I am competing in Project Run and Play, a childrens' clothing design and sewing competition. This week's theme is "Boys Week", and I sure had fun making this little outfit for my little boy.

Head on over to vote,

And then come back and check out this gratuitous display of photos.

I tried to get him down for a nap all day so I could finish sewing those darn pants, and then once he finally went to sleep I had to wake him right up to get some photos before the sun went down. Poor kid. He wasn't happy about it. I wasn't wither. I was hoping to get some good shots of his pretty blue eyes to play off his blue pants. Too much to ask?

It looks like his shirt is too short in this picture, but I had pulled it up so you could see his belt.

Carving supplies for making the print on his shirt. It was easier than I thought it would be.

My paper mock up of a shawl collar. The first one didn't work but after a few tweaks number 2 was a success!

I am aware that some people will HATE this belt for a boy. I don't care. I love it. Fashion is all about taking risks right?

Couldn't get him to put his little mitts in those pockets.. Love a pocket though.

This is the only photo I have of the pants pattern making process. I really wanted to use a pair he already had as a guide, but I didn't want to take them apart because I like them so much so I contorted them around and carefully pinned tracing paper to them and employed various other maneuvers I learned in my pattern-making class to get the basic shape, then added pockets etc., and somehow it all actually worked! No time for a test pair. I started this pair at like 7 pm on Wednesday night.

Your work really is SO clean and crisp. I would never know it was handmade in the way it is constructed. I cannot believe how you painted that top?! Incredible, Danielle!

  4. I just discovered your blog through PR&P, and let me tell you -- this is by far my favorite project EVER in this series! (Granted, I have two boys, but aside from that it's still awesome.)

Every element is appealing, from the hand-painted fabric to the shirt design to the pant color to the belt.

    Super job!

  11. I love everything about this outfit. It is just perfect - the style, the details, the colours. I have a little boy who just turned one so I am really hoping you do a tutorial. Good luck with the competition, I can't wait to see what you make next and am about to peek through your archives.

  12. This outfit is fantastic (and your little guy is just precious--I love the curly hair!) . . . my favorite out of the bunch (although so many of them were so, so cute!). The sweatshirt is just perfect. Boys' clothes can be so tough--you did a great job of making it interesting and stylish without going too far. Great job!

  13. first off, i'm glad to see all those pictures because the pants look SO professional. they look like you bought them out of a store. or better even. you are so good at the little details that way. love the whole outfit. (and makes me want to get out my rubber and tools!)

second, i am really surprised with how many people in the competition did not make a top but rather just re-fashioned one. i mean, it is a sewing competition. so props to you for doing everything from scratch.

thirdly, i am THIS close to sending you my sleeping book for ollie!

  16. This outfit is so amazing!!! I am very impressed with your fabric stamping, I love how the design is not consistently stamped but more looks like the ink is distressed and worn! You have my vote for sure! I just love it. Hope you win!!!

  17. What?!?!?!?! When you texted me that photo I totally thought you just made the pants! I figured the top he was wearing was some designer baby bit. I am in awe of you making your own print and that adorable shawl collar! Holy cow. Bowing down, bowing down....

  20. You are amazing! This is the cutest little boy outfit I have ever seen! I want one for my 4 year old so bad! I LOVE that top, at first I was over the moon with the fabric, then to find out you made it??? It blew my mind, and gives me great hope that I too could have such adorable fabric. I even love the belt. Even boys need to have a little pop of fashion! You really did amazing work!

  21. Gulp. Week 1, I felt your only competition was one, possibly two, designs. You were a fairly solid win. Week 2 looks like a different story. You are up against some strong competition, although Vanessa makes a great point that your design is not reconditioned. Pretty telltale that even though I am over-the-moon prejudiced, I'm having a tough time deciding. And Woodengirl, you make my heart sing.

  30. Wow, lots of cute designs this week but as has been stated, lots of remakes of little sweaters. And although cute, I question all the accessories, would they really stay on or be used?
I thought you do an excellent job of making an outfit that was comfortable and sensible, fit very well and had the right proportions in the design of your fabric. I was blown away when I saw that you designed it, who does that?Your sewing is flawless, and I love that it isn't matchy matchy. The belt buckle was so original, and the belt could be used with other outfits. This looks like what real babies wear. You can tell Danielle that you have done your homework.OX, Mom

  38. I know, it's forever ago, but is there a tutorial for the shawl collar anywhere? It's so incredibly cute!
I tried to make one myself, but the first time the opening was too narrow. The second time the front just wouldn't lie flat.
    Thank you!
