A tree for my baby girl

So I had this idea of a cute wall hanging floating around in my head for a few years. So when I found out I was going to have a girl, I knew I had to make it. So I starting collecting fabric that I thought would be cute and fit into my vision. I loved the idea of a little tree for my baby girl to dream under. And I thought little birds and a nest would be a cute way to pull other colors into it. I thought I was being pretty creative, but it turns out birds are all the rage these days!

With no pattern, I just kind of looked for the right colors and feels when it came to fabric and trim and hoped it all worked out OK. This was actually a harder job then I anticipated.

I was having a hard time drawing a tree, despite many night shifts (oh I don't miss those!) trying to sketch one out. Trees are hard to draw! At least for me. So when I came across this picture at pottery barn I bought it, and used it as a rough outline of where my branches should go.

And after A LOT of erasing and moving things around to fit my eventual vision I came up with this:

And then I returned the Pottery Barn one... Is that bad?

So then it was just a lot of cutting, which seem easier than it really is. For one ting I stuck the not as sticky side of the fusible webbing to the fabric so it kept coming off every time I'd try to navigate my scissors around those little turns. Argh. Worth it in the end though.

Things started going more smoothly when I started cutting out leaves. I just kind of drew three sizes of a leaf that I was happy with and cut away. This part was pretty fun. I loved seeing all the fabrics that I had chosen, kind of come together.

Then I tried a whole bunch of different combinations of birds and eggs, and frankly got so sick of looking at it that I had to walk away from the whole thing for about a week.

And when Travis finally voiced his concerns that the ric-rack bomb that had gone off in the craft room would never get cleaned up, I made myself finish it. So here is what I came out with in the end.

I think I like it. But mostly I am just excited for the baby girl to come and dream under it. At this rate, I will not get even half the other little projects I have dreamed up done.

Oh well.

Thanks for being excited with us!

  7. It's adorable, but it's freaking me out . . .

I am near completion on an almost identical project (in theory, not in execution--it's very amateur). Tree that was similarly hard to draw, three sizes of leaves, wall hanging, etc. And I'm in the midst of cutting out bird shapes for the nursery wall.

I'm starting to believe in the whole collective unconscious thing.
