I wasn't kidding

Dinner tonight...yummy and don't leave out the mint! It's so good!


So I forgot to say a few things about the ministry of cooking thing.

The whole point of Jamie Oliver doing it is to get people interested in cooking at home, instead of eating take-out, in hopes to help Britain (and the US) stop being so fat.

But what I LOVE about what he is doing is that he isn't saying "I'm going to show you how to make weird fat free, sugar free brownies", he is saying, "have a bit of cream and bacon, and loads of peas, with a great salad", because eating food that is yummy and satisfying and full of fresh vegetables and other ingredients is so much better for you than chicken nuggets, or diet cookies. Its as much about what you are eating as it is about what you aren't.

I am so glad that my mom taught me how to cook when I was young. She taught me how to make food from actual whole raw ingredients (as opposed to hamburger helper-ish meals). I am amazed at how it seems to be getting harder and harder to find actual ingredients in grocery stores, and how more and more aisles are filled with boxed, mixes instead. I think a lot of people don't know how to cook any other way.

Anyway, the other point of the ministry of food is that you are supposed to try the recipes and then pass them on in an effort to spread the wonderful cooking love.

So I am...passing it on. Literally.

  2. Yum. I love that philosophy you described. My mom too always made from scratch, and for the last few weeks I've started cooking (thanks to everyone's help), and I'm loving it. Always looking for new recipes though, so I'll definitely check this podcast out. Thanks!

    cooking with real, whole foods is so wonderful. when we eat well, i feel like i can just hear my body saying "thank you" all day :)

I haven't heard of Jamie Oliver before--chalk that up to no TV, probably--so thank you for introducing me, because this is exactly how I like to cook! Whole foods rock! (esp. with a side of cream and bacon)

  5. I totally agree with you that you can't find a lot of ingredients at the store anymore. It makes me saw. Like, I would really just love some rye flour. Well, can't find it.

    That looks so good, I'll have to try it soon. My husband grew up on hamburger helper type meals (they had 6 kids so it's understandable) but I didn't. So Aaron used to look at me wierd when I'd tell him that I was making rolls and bread from scratch.

    3. It's all about real, whole foods. And don't you think it's not as hard as people think? It's funny--whenever I find myself making mac and cheese for Blaine I think, why not just cook some pasta and throw on some pesto sauce and some veggies? Just as fast, just as easy, Blaine loves it as much, and it actually gives him the nutrients he needs. Imagine that.

  8. I completely agree with Emily. I feel better when I cook with "real" foods. It just requires more forward-thinking, and I need to get back into the habit of meal planning/grocery shopping on the weekend.

  9. I agree, sometimes it is hard to find raw ingredients at the grocery store. One of the reason I would really love to have a garden on day.

  10. Okay, I have tried both recipes you posted. The salmon one was awesome! The verdit is "meh" on the pasta one, but I think I did something wrong. There was very little sauce and too much grease. It didn't look like your picture!
